JON B

Jon B. was born on November 11, in Rhode Island. His father's family has roots in Campbell and his mother's in Los Altos. He grew up surrounded by music. His father, is a conductor for the Los Angeles Symphonic Camerata; he was recently guest conductor for the Shanghai Opera. His mother, is a piano teacher and performer. His brother, plays cello and bass in Jon's band. His sister, plays violin in the critically acclaimed Quartet. Jon B's grandfather owned Town & Country Music Center, the Palo Alto record store near Stanford University where Jon B. spent many afternoons. David Buck jokes that Jon B. is the only family member to go into music without training. `He took three lessons, learned how to bow and then quit,'' Buck says. Jon, himself, was only nine years old when he learned to play the keyboards and started writing his own original songs. He was also soon proficient on the bass as well as the drums.

Jon attended Eliot Middle School in Altadena, CA, as well as John Muir, and L.A. County High School for the Arts. By his teenage years Jon had recorded dozens of demo tracks. While still in high school, Jon had been urged by to contact Tracey E. Edmonds, the President & CEO of Yab Yum Records at the time. Jon was then contracted as a solo singer and songwriter and signed to Yab Yum Records.

Artist Bio Continued

Jon started writing and producing music for various artists. Some of his first work included two remixes he produced of Michael Jackson's single "You Are Not Alone" as well as music for artists such as Az Yet, Color Me Badd, and Toni Braxton. He also wrote and produced four songs for the After 7 album "Reflections". Jon's first single was a duet with Babyface entitled "Someone To Love". The song was featured on the Bad Boys soundtrack and later on Jon's debut album "Bonafide". The single was a number 5 hit on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts, and later earned a grammy nomination. In May of 1995, he released his now platinum-certified album "Bonafide." Jon B. wrote, produced, and arranged all except two of the songs on the album. Jon played instruments on every single track from the album. He also solely handled the drum programing on all except two tracks on the album. On September 16, 1997, Jon's second album, Cool Relax, was released. The album contained three of Jon's biggest hits; the Tim & Bob produced "They Don't Know", "Are U Still Down" (which featured the late Tupac Shakur), and "I Do (Whatcha Say Boo)". Videos were shot for all three songs, including a video for the remix of "Cool Relax" featuring the late rapper Guru and "Don't Say". Actress Sanaa Lathan appeared in the video as Jon's girlfriend. Cool Relax was hailed as one of the best R&B albums released that year and was certified platinum. This was his most successful album and "They Don't Know" was his highest chart topping single of his career.
His third album, Pleasures U Like was released on March 20, 2001, with the sole single and video being "Don't Talk". The song rose as high as #3 on the US R&B charts. The album was well received critically and publicly, going gold, but poor promotion spurred Jon to leave Epic after its release. Jon said of the situation: "It was time for new energy. My last album [for Sony] ... we did a gold [selling] album, which is really cool, off of one single... I worked really hard on that album. I had Nas on there, Faith on there, AZ, Cuban Link - it was a full album, as far as having a shot on the market. But I think that it was just a matter of promotion."[1]
On October 5, 2004, his fourth album, Stronger Everyday (originally titled Everday Struggles), was released. For this album, Jon got the help from hit producers Just Blaze, Johnny "J", and Mike City. The first single was the Tank (singer) produced "Lately" with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds on background vocals. The album included appearances by rappers Ol' Dirty Bastard (going by the name Dirt McGirt), Scarface (rapper), Beenie Man, and once again the late Tupac Shakur. Videos were shot for "Lately" and "Everytime (remix)" featuring Beenie Man. Like Pleasures U Like, it was well-received critically, but received sub-par promotion. He then left Sanctuary Urban in late 2005.
